SUMMER SKINCARE TIPS TO KEEP BREAKOUTS AT BAY

Just at the point you perfect your winter skincare routine after months of battling dry skin, the summer arrives and it’s time to rethink your regime again. Dealing with oily skin and blemishes in the heat can be daunting, but our top tips for managing summer skin will keep breakouts under control so you can get on with enjoying the sunshine.

“an increase in heat, sweat and humidity

can increase skins

oil production”

DO YOU GET MORE BREAKOUTS IN THE SUMMER?

Some people find their spots improve in the summer, but it’s often the look and redness of spots can be minimised with a tan. In fact, an increase in heat, sweat and humidity can increase oil production, making pores more likely to become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells which results in more breakouts. And it’s not just the heat that can cause flare-ups….SPF use that isn't suitable for oily and blemish prone skin can also contribute, as well as continuing to use rich winter skincare. SPF is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine so you need to find one that works for you, but don’t panic, there’s plenty you can do to keep summer breakouts under control.

TOP TIPS FOR SUMMER SKINCARE ROUTINES

  • 01

    KEEP your face CLEAN

Make sure you wash your face every evening to reduce the build up of any excess oil, as well as removing layers of SPF you have been using during the day. You can continue to use AHAs and BHA based cleansers even in the summer, as they are the most effective at helping to control oil and unclog pores.

With more skin on show in summer, we recommend using your usual cleanser on your chest, arms and back as well if you start to see an increase in body acne. Just don’t scrub or rub too hard, as this can cause irritation and damage to your skin barrier - gentle does it

  • 02

INTRODUCE SOME LOVE FOR YOUR PORES

We tend to wear less foundation in summer so our pores are in need of some TLC after the cold start to the year. Introducing gentle acids to help with exfoliation on different levels, as well as rehydration will not only ensure your pores are well looked after but you'll also be working hard to combat any blackheads that might be lingering.

  • 03

    LIGHTEN UP YOUR MOISTURISER

Keep your moisturiser lightweight and lotion based, especially if you were using richer creams in the winter months. Check for ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide for blemish control and skin hydration without the need for heavy emollients. Partner with an oil-free SPF that won’t block pores (some dermatologists favour mineral based formulations for protection without causing flare-ups)

  • 04

    DON’T OVERDUE THE MATTE MAKE-UP

While we all love a summer skin glow, the reality is that sweat, excess oil and even SPF can tempt us to top up our powder and mattifying makeup to keep shine at bay. However, touching your face and adding make-up can lead to more blocked pores, even more oil production etc etc. Instead, we recommend using drops to control your oil production or blotting paper if you really want to tackle extra shine during the day (hey, if its good enough for Fenty….)

  • 05

    STAY HYDRATED

Dehydration can lead to increased oil production, and in turn more breakouts. Keep that water bottle topped up and your skin will thank you for it

  • 06

    RETHINK YOUR SUMMER WARDROBE

Body breakouts can be made worse through sweating in areas like the back, with fabrics like polyester trapping moisture inside and increasing the risk of clogged pores and bacteria build up. Instead throw on a cotton t-shirt, as natural fibres like cotton are breathable and absorb moisture rather than trapping it against your skin
