Are TikTok beauty trends dangerous? Understanding TikTok Skincare Fads
TikTok has become a breeding ground for all sorts of skincare trends, but before you dive into any of these skincare trends like cupping your face, or applying handfuls of petroleum jelly to your face before bed, it's worth asking: are these TikTok trends safe, especially for those with sensitive skin? What works for one person may not work for another, and blindly following trends without considering your skin type and individual needs can lead to unintended consequences.
Here's our take on some of the latest skincare trends if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin....
sunscreen contouring
This trend involves using sunscreen to create contour lines on the face, like makeup contouring to accentuate facial features. This could pose several risks such as leaving certain areas of the face more vulnerable to sun damage, which ultimately if done too often can increase the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer in unprotected areas. Also, if you are treating spots and blemishes with skincare acids it's really important to use SPF to protect against sun sensitivity.
One to avoid
slugging
Another recent trend circulating is slugging, which involves applying a thick layers of petroleum jelly to your face to supposedly lock-in moisture and create a barrier against environmental aggressors. This can clog your pores with mineral oil, dirt, and other bacteria, leading to acne breakouts (especially for those with acne prone skin). Slugging may also contribute to those tiny white spots forming under the skins surface as the occlusive nature of petroleum jelly can prevent proper exfoliation.
One to avoid
potato skincare
It may sound crazy but possibly the new normal, many on TikTok are now rubbing potatoes all over their face in hope that it will clear the skins surface. This may work for one and not for another, but we can’t recommend you going to your kitchen and chopping up a potato and rubbing it directly all over your face. In fact, raw potatoes contain enzymes and acids that may cause skin irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Applying food directly to your skin could cause an allergic reaction, this can range from mild itching to hives, or more severely swelling. Plus, like many of these skincare trends there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of them!

are tiktok skincare trends safe?
When it comes to skincare, the allure of TikTok trends can be irresistible, promising quick fixes and miraculous results with just a few swipes and taps. However, beneath the surface lies a realm of potential dangers, especially for those with sensitive skin.
Many of these trends involve the use of ingredients or techniques that can wreak havoc on sensitive skin. Take, for example, the widespread use of DIY skincare concoctions. While the idea of whipping up a face mask using ingredients from your fridge may seem harmless, certain ingredients like lemon juice or baking soda can be harsh and abrasive, causing purging, irritation, or allergic reactions, particularly for those with sensitive skin. Without proper research or consideration, following skincare trends blindly can result in skincare woes rather than wonders. Just ask Lizzy (me), who, eager to try the latest Korean skincare trend, found herself with a red, inflamed complexion, with a new number of spotty friends and a newfound sensitivity to a list of ingredients.
how do i know which tiktok skincare trends are right for me?
Before considering trying these skincare trends, (because surely not all are bad right?), ensure that you understand your skin type. Is it oily, dry, combination, or sensitive? Understanding your skin's natural tendencies will help you select products that balance and nourish without causing imbalance or irritation.
Next, you can pinpoint your skin concerns and go from there, whether it’s acne, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, or dehydration. Knowing what you want to address in your skin will allow you to tailor your skincare routine, ensuring that you're not just experimenting randomly, but rather selecting products and techniques that directly target your skin's needs.
Perform a patch test on yourself on a small part of your skin, such as the inner forearm, to prevent applying all over your face ensuring you won’t irritate your skin. Also familiarise yourself with common skincare ingredients. If you are unsure where to look, we use many in our products that are great for sensitive skin types. Look for products that contain ingredients that are known to your specific needs.
By prioritizing your skin's health and individual needs, you can navigate the world of skincare trends safely and confidently. Before you dive into the world of skincare trends, remember: a little research goes a long way.
Stay savvy and keep your skin glowing!
